Basic Info
Name:Dr. Greg House
Bio
The Doctor is In
Name: Dr. Greg House
Original canon: House, M.D.
Age: 46
Race: Human
Physical description: Tall, average build, blue eyes, dark hair (thinning). He walks with a noticeable limp on his right side, and uses a cane.

Job: House is a doctor. He has worked at New Tokyo General on Miranda for the past six years. It's a rather cushy job - he runs his own department, and for the most part picks cases that interest him. Generally these are cases that are diagnostically difficult, though he is forced to spend some of his time working on the general populace who come into the hospital.

Wealth: Because of his job, House does better than most people. But he grew up without a lot, and tends to live sparsely. The extra money that doesn't go towards supporting his drug habit goes into his savings.

Living Situation: He lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment on Miranda.
I don't have a pain management problem, I have a pain problem.
House grew up bouncing between the various colonies on Nanashi and sometimes Oublié; his father was a black market arms dealer and during House's childhood there was a run of bad years where they hardly had enough to scrape by. The best times for House were when they would settle someplace long enough that he could find books and learn
everything he could. He was extremely clever, though because of hi father he grew up rather hard and cynical. As soon as he was old enough to leave his parents, he settled into one of the colonies on Oublié, apprenticing under a doctor there, as he didn't have enough money to go to Miranda and attend medical school.

For years he scraped and saved and finally had enough to move to Miranda and take the entrance exam - and scored high enough to get a scholarship. When he finished school, he worked in the hospital for a few years, but then went back to Oublié, figuring that he owed his former mentor the benefit of his new knowledge. Though he didn't have the sort of equipment or resources available in a real hospital, at least he didn't have anyone telling him what to do, didn't have to deal with the bureaucracy, so he planned to take charge of the medical center in a few years when the doctor retired. It was a small one even by Oublié's standards, a bit off the beaten path, and the colony built up around it didn't have the population of some of the larger colonies. As a result, medical supplies and equipment were sometimes late in coming. However, it turned out to be even worse than that.

When House was making his way back from a patient's house, he was bitten by a venomous reptile indigenous to that region of the planet. Under normal circumstances, he would have been fine. However, when he got back to the medical center and the doctor in charge got ready to administer the anti-venom... it turned out that there wasn't any. The box that should have contained anti-venom for all of the appropriate animals in the region was only half full - apparently they'd gotten the leftovers from the last shipment from Miranda, and hadn't even been told. The way that the venom worked... it basically ate away at the living cells in House's leg, leaving masses of dead muscle. It took three days to get House to the hospital on Miranda, and by then the damage was irreversible.

House refused a prosthetic limb, despite all medical advice to the contrary. He managed to keep his leg, though he walks with a pronounced limp and a cane, which is very unusual given the advancements in medicine and prosthetics. He supposedly keeps the pain under control with prescribed painkillers, but he actually keeps a steady supply of stronger drugs from the black market. They're the only thing that can keep the pain completely under control.

The hospital knew that the supply problem that had exacerbated House's injury was completely their screw-up. And House was very, very angry. In order to avoid a public spectacle, they did two things - sent top-notch supplies to his old colony, and offered him a good job at the hospital on Miranda. He knew that he wouldn't be able to get around well on Oublié in his current condition, so he accepted, on the condition that he would have his own department and be largely independent. As it turned out, he was a really really good doctor. In the years that followed, he made something of a name for himself, and patients sought him out - so it didn't turn out so bad for the hospital after all.
Bedside Manner
House is not an easy man to deal with. He's cynical and sarcastic and has a keen ability to pick apart people's weaknesses. He has little use for social niceties or bedside manner. He's more interested in the science of medicine than in helping people. He likes to solve puzzles, and he likes to be right. Since his accident he's become increasingly bitter, towards the hospital, the government, pretty much everyone. He sees himself as outside the mainstream, something of a non-conformist if not an anarchist. But he knows just where to draw the line.
